Coconut Oil to Get Rid of Scalp Fungus

By Lesley Graybeal ; Updated July 27, 2017

Coconut oil is one of the many home remedies and natural treatments for scalp fungus and a range of other skin conditions. Fungus such as ringworm or athlete’s foot, skin disorders such as psoriasis and dandruff, or even seasonally dry skin can cause itchiness and discomfort all over the body. When the scalp is affected by ringworm or psoriasis, treatment can seem difficult, but coconut oil treatments provide a convenient and natural solution.

Conditions and Affected Areas

Coconut oil can soothe itchy scalp caused by ringworm that has spread to or originated on the scalp as well as scalp psoriasis, characterized by scaly red or yellow patches of skin. Coconut oil is helpful on the scalp because it is safe for use on the head and promotes hair health, but can also be used to treat skin conditions anywhere on the body.

Coconut oil functions by moisturizing the skin and providing chemical compounds necessary to help the skin block out and recover from infections like those involved with scalp fungus. By helping the skin stay soft and moisturized, coconut oil reduces the cracking and breaking in the skin that can exacerbate existing infections and increase the likelihood of new infection. Coconut oil also contains antimicrobial fatty acids that are synthesized by the good bacteria on the skin to help produce a protective acid layer to guard against and recover from infection.

Treatment Types

Many types of coconut oil treatment exist for use on itchy scalp or skin. Pure coconut oil can be applied several tablespoons at a time directly to the scalp. Additionally, many creams and lotions use coconut oil as an ingredient, and some coconut oil shampoos and conditioners are also available. When looking for coconut oil treatments, check the ingredients for coal tar, salicylic acid and sulfur, all of which assist coconut oil in treating scalp fungus or infection.

Combining Treatments

Coconut oil treatments for scalp fungus can be combined with other types of treatments for maximum effectiveness, including medicated and antifungal creams and topical treatments, antifungal shampoos and exposure to UVA and UVB light therapy.
