How to Check if Your Breath Smells Bad. Having bad breath in public is embarrassing. Even if you brush your teeth, it is possible to get bad breath through the things you eat and drink, from smoking or from health problems. No one wants to have bad breath, so here are a few steps on how to check to see if your breath smells bad.
Lick the back of your wrist. Allow it to completely dry and then smell it. If it stinks, your breath also stinks.
Breathe into both of your hands. Cover your nose and mouth with both hands and breathe heavily. Whiff after breathing heavy. If your air stinks, then your breath also stinks.
Hold a cup up to your mouth and breathe into it. Then place it against your nose. If it stinks, then your breath also stinks. Be sure to rinse out the cup each time you do this technique.
Chew on a pen for 5 minutes. Then place the pen under your nose. If the pen sticks, your breath stinks. This is good to do when you are in front of other people such as at a meeting or in class. It is a good way to check your breath without anyone realizing what you are doing.
Use a home tester kit. There are breath testing kits sold at some drug stores and at the dentist's office. These are a good way to check your breath when you are at home. People with bad breath caused by a medical problem normally use home testing kits.
Always carry gum or mints. You never know when your breath will start stinking, and it is better to be safe than sorry. Brush the tongue, cheeks and roof of the mouth when brushing your teeth. This will also prevent bad breath.
Do not talk to another person up close if you discover your breath stinks. Chew a piece of gum for a few minutes before talking to another person.
