Benefits of Using a Steam Room After a Workout

Steams rooms are enclosed areas that are kept hot using heat and steam. They can be found in fitness clubs or around fitness rooms in places like hotels or spas. Some people even have a steam room in their own home to use at their convenience. Steam rooms have a number of health benefits, which can explain why they are found near exercise areas for people to use after a workout. Before stepping foot into a steam room, it's important to be sure your body is hydrated so that you don't get dehydrated, which can cause a host of other health complications such as dizziness or fainting.

Body Detoxification

When the body temperature rises from exposure to warm temperatures or rigorous activity, sweating will follow. When the body sweats a form of detoxification occurs because toxins will leave the body through the sweat when it leaves the skin's pores. Steam rooms are kept at high temperatures, which will allow a person to begin sweating almost immediately.

Keeps Muscles Flexible

After a long or strenuous workout, it's important to keep the muscles flexible so they don't lock up or become stiff. The heat and humidity of steam rooms help to keep the muscles relaxed and flexible. Steam rooms can also help to reduce joint pains after physical activity.

Lungs and Bronchial Tubes Open Up

For asthma sufferers, or people who have some trouble breathing, the steam and heat from steam rooms can help to open the lungs and bronchial tubes making it easier to breathe. The body is going to be breathing pretty hard post workout and for the body to begin to relax, being able to breathe is crucial. When the lungs and bronchial tubes open, the body is able to take in as much oxygen as needed.


Heat is an element that is great in relaxing the body, and relaxation is just what the body needs immediately following a workout. After working out so hard, whether it be from cardio, strength training or a combination of the two, it's very important to relax the muscles post workout so they don't become overworked or stiff.
