Ayurvedic Treatments for White Hair
For many people, hair turning gray or white can be very embarrassing, particularly when it happens before a certain age. However, there are some natural Ayurvedic treatments that can help to remedy premature white hair and restore natural hair color in some cases. However, these remedies have not been tested or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), so consult your doctor before starting any of these treatments, especially if you have allergies or medical conditions.
Curry Leaves and Coconut Oil
According to Melanie A. Sachs, author of “Ayurvedic Beauty Care,” a boiled mixture of curry leaves and coconut oil can be used as a topical treatment to help return some color to white hair. To make this mixture, combine ¼ cup curry leaves with 1/8 cup coconut oil in a small saucepan and bring to the boil over medium heat. Remove the saucepan from heat and cover. Set aside until the mixture has cooled to just above room temperature. Gently massage a small amount of the mixture onto the scalp with a towel around your neck and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse your hair with lukewarm water and shampoo with a gentle shampoo and conditioner. This treatment can be used daily as long as it doesn’t bother your scalp or skin, and unused portions of the mixture can be kept in the refrigerator for 48 hours.
Carrot Seed Essential Oil and Sesame Oil
According to Vasant Lad, author of "The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies,” a mixture of carrot seed essential oil and sesame oil can be applied to the scalp and roots of the hair to help cure white hair. To make this treatment, combine ½ tsp. carrot seed essential oil and 4 tbsp. sesame oil in a dark, clean glass bottle with a tight-fitting lid and shake to combine. Gently massage the mixture onto the scalp and roots of your hair and leave it on for 30 minutes. Rinse your hair with warm water and wash with a gentle shampoo and conditioner. This treatment can be used once per day, as long as it doesn’t cause any irritation. Unused portions of this mixture can be stored in a cool, dark place for up to one month.
Amla Juice, Lime Juice and Almond Oil
According to Reenita Malholtra, author of "Ayurveda: A Holistic Approach To Health,” a mixture of amla juice, lime juice and almond oil is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine and beauty care to restore color to white and gray hair. To make this mixture, combine 1 tbsp. amla juice, 1 tsp. lime juice and 4 tbsp. almond oil in a small container and shake or stir to combine. Massage a small amount of this mixture onto the scalp and leave it on for 45 minutes before rinsing with cool water and washing with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. This natural remedy can be used daily as long as it doesn’t irritate your skin or scalp, and any part of the mixture not used in the first treatment can be kept in the refrigerator for 72 hours.
