Atkins Diet Phase 1 Snacks

The Atkins Diet is a strict regimen of food intake divided up into phases. In phase 1, often called the induction phase, you are to eat three meals and two snacks daily, while limiting your carbohydrate intake to 20 carbs per day. You don't restrict fats and you eat protein at every meal. This diet and weight loss program is most strict in the beginning as it weans you off certain foods that can create cravings. The Atkins Diet snack foods in phase one are still healthy, but they will allow for some between-meal nibbling.


Cheese can be a healthy snack food in moderation. Net carbohydrates per 1-ounce serving of cheese is different depending on the cheese selected. According to the diet’s official website, cheddar cheese has no net carb grams. Gouda and mozzarella have 0.6 net carb grams. Other cheeses under 1 gram of net carbs include blue cheese, goat cheese, cream cheese and parmesan. Swiss cheese has 1 gram of net carbs and feta cheese has 1.2 grams of net carbs. Because cheese contains carbs you are limited to 3 to 4 ounces a day.

Eggs can be a great source of protein as a snack food. Eggs can be cooked in a variety of ways to break up any boredom with having an egg snack. Eggs may be scrambled, deviled, fried, made into an omelet, poached or soft/hard boiled. The diet’s official website encourages using onions, peppers and mushrooms to season the eggs. Other items that can be used in the eggs include cheese or herbs.


Vegetables can be sliced or chunked into finger-food snacks. These will provide fiber to the diet as well. On the phase one part of the Atkins diet you can have 2 to 3 cups of vegetables each day. Veggies good for snacking include broccoli and cauliflower, tomatoes, celery, cucumbers and squash.

Salads are a nice way to snack and provide nutrients to the body. Lettuce, onion, pepper, bean sprouts, spinach, cucumbers, tomatoes and cabbage are good veggies to include in your snack salad, and all are ingredients that are available in phase one on the Atkins Diet. Garnishes for salads that are allowed are three slices of bacon, a hard-boiled egg, cheese, mushrooms and sour cream.
