Oligoantigenic Diet List

By Shelley Moore ; Updated July 18, 2017

An elimination diet removes foods commonly associated with allergy and intolerance. An oligoantigenic diet takes the elimination diet further by eliminating nearly all foods except a limited number that generally cause no problems. If your symptoms clear up after a determined amount of time, you add more of these well-tolerated foods. If symptoms do not subside, you switch to different foods on the list. Eventually, you can begin adding other foods back into the diet one by one to gauge if they cause any health problems. In a study published in the Oct. 15, 1983 issue of "Lancet," an oligoantigenic diet was effective at eliminating migraines in children.

Fruits

Fruits allowed on the oligoantigenic diet include bananas, apples and pears. You are supposed to eat only one type of these fruits at first, and add the others later because even these fruits can cause problems for certain people.

Vegetables

The only vegetable allowed in this oligoantigenic diet was one choice of the Brassica genus. These vegetables include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, kale, kohlrabi, rutabaga and turnips. Other vegetables that can be added later are carrots, lettuce and parsnips.

Meat

The "Lancet" study allowed children to eat either lamb or chicken, and to switch to the other meat if they still experienced migraines while eating the first group of foods. Other forms of the diet as listed by the Interstitial Cystitis Network allow lamb and turkey in one version, and any meat except chicken or veal in the other.

Potatoes and Rice

The oligoantigenic diet extremely restricts carbohydrates other than specific fruits and vegetables. At the beginning of the diet, you are allowed to eat either potatoes or rice. No grain products other than rice are allowed until you begin adding suspect foods back into the diet.

Other Foods

The oligoantigenic diet allows water as the only fluid. You also can cook with sunflower or olive oil. These diets usually involve vitamin and mineral supplements to make sure people obtain adequate nutrition while eating a limited variety of foods.
