Fiber Drink Benefit

By Rachel Nall

Fiber is a component of many foods that can be ingested into the body, but not digested. However, fiber does have health benefits, including reducing the risk of developing certain chronic conditions such as heart disease, according to the Harvard School of Public Health. Fiber exists in two forms: insoluble, which adds bulk to the stool, allowing it to move more easily through the digestive system and soluble fiber, which dissolves in water and binds with foods in the stomach to slow digestion, which makes a person feel fuller, longer in addition to other benefits, according to the Mayo Clinic. Fiber drinks, such as Metamucil, Citrucel, Benefiber, Unilactin, or Genfiber, utilize the soluble fiber psyllium in order to offer fiber benefits via a healthy drink.

Helps the Heart

High cholesterol levels can contribute to a host of health problems, including increased risk of heart disease. However, not all cholesterol is equal--high-density lipoprotein (HDL) is considered the beneficial form of cholesterol while the low-density lipoprotein (LDL), is considered to be the harmful cholesterol form. The insoluble fiber found in fiber drinks helps to lower LDL cholesterol, according to the American Heart Association.

Other ways soluble fiber improves heart health is through reducing inflammation and blood pressure, according to the Mayo Clinic. The Harvard School of Public Health released findings that an increase in dietary fiber intake, such as that that can be experienced through drinking fiber drinks, can lead to a 40 percent reduced risk of experiencing coronary heart disease.

Relief from Constipation

When fiber from fiber drinks pass through the bowels, they work to absorb water, creating a gel-like paste. Fiber's water-absorbing properties are beneficial in relieving constipation because they make a stool more soft and therefore easier to pass, according to In addition to reducing constipation symptoms, having a softer stool means a person can experience relief from or a reduced risk of hemorrhoids.

Those who consume more soluble fiber should ensure they drink plenty of fluids so too much water will not be absorbed by the soluble fiber. Because fiber drinks combine both fiber intake with fluids, this can be especially beneficial.

Weight-Loss or Weight-Control Aid

According to the Mayo Clinic, fiber--such as that found in a fiber drink--is extremely "energy-dense." This means a person may consume what seems like a lot of a food, yet it is low in calories. Fiber drinks are low on the glycemic index, meaning they are slowly moved through the body, which can leave you feeling fuller, longer. Because you are not as hungry, you may have an easier time controlling your weight, according to
