Pediasure Nutrition Information
Though many children are picky eaters, sometimes a child becomes such a picky eater that he doesn't eat enough food and loses weight. This situation can present a problem, as children grow so rapidly that proper nutrition is essential. PediaSure is a nutrition shake that comes in many flavors and can help kids get good nutrition when they don't want to eat.
Pediasure has 99 Calories and 2.86 g of Protein per 100 gram serving according to the nutrition facts provided by the USDA Food Composition Database.
According to the Dr. Mary Gavin, Pediatrician and correspondent for the Nemours Foundation, just because a child doesn't eat a lot or looks a little skinny doesn't mean they are truly underweight. She states that genetics contributes to a child's stature. However, if a doctor says that your child is truly underweight, it may be because of a medical reason such as failure to thrive or a thyroid problem. PediaSure is useful in these situations because it provides calories and nutrients in the form of a sweet-tasting, portable drink.
A regular-sized 18-ounce PediaSure drink contains about 240 calories, according to the makers of PediaSure. The amount of calories in PediaSure varies slightly depending on the flavor. Some of these calories come from the milk in the shake, and many of the calories come from sugar, which is added to PediaSure to improve the taste.
According to the PediaSure website, each PediaSure shake has 9 g of fat, which is about 14 percent of the recommended daily dietary allowance of fat for children. Some of the fat in PediaSure comes from milk, while some of it is added in from plant sources. PediaSure drinks also have 3 g of saturated fat per serving but they do not have any trans fat per serving.
Protein is an important macronutrient for children as it provides energy and helps preserve muscle mass. The makers of PediaSure state that each serving has 7 g of protein, which is about 14 percent of the amount that children need to get each day. PediaSure also has individual amino acids, which are the building blocks of complete proteins.
Vitamins and Minerals
PediaSure is fortified with vitamins and minerals to make up for some of the nutrients that poor eaters do not get in their foods. The PediaSure website states that a regular sized PediaSure drink has 25 percent of a child's daily recommended calcium intake, 20 percent of her iron recommendation and 40 percent of a child's daily recommended intake of vitamin C. PediaSure also contains B vitamins and minerals such as copper and selenium.
