Dry, cracked, irritated skin can be caused by living in a dry climate, the use of harsh soaps, bathing too frequently in excessively hot water and a variety of medical conditions -- including eczema. If you're frustrated with slathering on layer after layer of body lotion with limited results, try soaking your cracked hands in a soothing olive oil soak.

Pour 3 cups water, 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, 2 tablespoons coconut oil and 1 cup milk in a microwave safe bowl. Stir to incorporate the ingredients. Choose a bowl large enough to accommodate both hands comfortably. Use any variety of cow's milk in your refrigerator.

Microwave the mixture on a medium setting for 20 minutes. Remove the bowl, stir and carefully test the heat of the mixture with one finger. The mixture should be warm to the touch, but not too hot. If the mixture isn't warm enough for you, microwave it on low for an additional 10 to 20 seconds.

Submerge both your hands in the olive oil soak for 10 to 15 seconds. If the mixture begins to cool, microwave it for an additional 10 to 20 seconds.

Remove your hands from the soak and rinse off the olive oil mixture under lukewarm water. Pat your hands dry before applying your favorite hand cream. Dump the remaining olive oil soak down the drain.

Add two to three drops of your favorite fragrance or essential oil, if desired.
