What Is the Difference Between Beachbody Meal Replacement and Shakeology?

Beachbody provides in-home fitness and weight-loss solutions through DVD-based fitness programs, dietary guidelines and a variety of nutritional supplements. Two such supplements, Beachbody Meal Replacement and Shakeology, are low-calorie powders designed to mix in liquids, replace meals and promote weight loss. Shakeology supplement powder contains more nutrients and is more expense than Beachbody’s Meal Replacement. Consult your doctor before replacing meals with dietary supplements.

Meal Replacement Shake

Beachbody’s Meal Replacement Shake is a relatively low-calorie, high-protein supplement powder intended to promote weight loss. It comes in two flavors, chocolate and vanilla, and contains whey protein, soy protein and a variety of vitamins and minerals. According to the company website, 36 grams of vanilla flavored Meal Replacement powder provides 140 calories, 15 grams of protein, 4 grams of dietary fiber and a variety of vitamins and minerals. The supplement is intended to replace one meal a day, either breakfast or dinner. The powder contains no artificial coloring, preservatives, aspartame or gluten. Meal Replacement Shakes are meant to be mixed in a blender along with ice and some type of liquid, such as water, milk or juice.


Beachbody’s Shakeology line of supplement powders is designed for the same purposes as the Meal Replacement Shakes but was introduced more recently. Shakeology comes in three flavors: chocolate, tropical strawberry and greenberry. According to the company website, 40 grams of greenberry Shakeology powder contains 140 calories, 16 grams of protein, 3 grams of dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals, and a variety of herbs, antioxidant extracts, digestive enzymes and probiotics, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus. You also mix Shakeology powders in a blender with ice and liquid.

Main Differences

The main differences between these two supplement powders are ingredients and cost. Shakeology powders are more than twice as expensive as Meal Replacement Shakes, but they contain a wider variety of ingredients. Shakeology may replace some supplements you’re now taking, which could offset the additional cost of the powder. Shakeology powders are higher in vitamin C and manganese than Meal Replacement Shakes, although they contain less of some other vitamins and minerals.


Both meal replacement shakes and protein shakes have a place in a balanced diet, as long as your meal plan also includes lots of other, healthful foods. While it might be tempting to replace many of your meals with shakes, it's not effective for long-term weight loss because the diet is not sustainable, explains the NYU Langone Medical Center. However, they can be consumed in moderation. Shakeology, because of its protein content, helps you recover after workouts. Tufts University explains that this protein repairs muscle tissue that becomes damaged during workouts, which helps you prepare for your next exercise session.


Meal Replacement Shakes may be a better choice if you are focused on protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. If digestive enzymes, antioxidants, probiotics and various “greens” interest you, then Shakeology may be a better option. Consult a nutritionist or doctor about the potential benefits and repercussions of substituting a supplemental shake for a regular breakfast or lunch each day. Weight loss should not be attempted at the expense of overall health.
