Mixing Waxy Maize & Protein

By Serena Styles

Supplements are a effective way to fuel your body and meet your daily nutrient requirements. Two important nutrients, protein and carbohydrates, support muscle growth and energy. Waxy maize starch is an easy-to-use source of carbohydrates that you can mix with protein powder for a nutrient-packed supplement. You can mix waxy maize and protein in advance and store the blend in an airtight container for convenient use.

Waxy Maize

Waxy maize starch is a cornstarch derivative with a light, fluffy texture. It is relatively flavorless, which allows you to add it to drinks and smoothies without affecting taste. When you ingest waxy maize starch, it travels through your stomach to your intestines for quick absorption. The carbohydrates that waxy maize supplies to your body are converted to glycogen, which your muscles use for energy. After a tough workout, when your glycogen stores are depleted, waxy maize helps revitalize your muscles quickly. In one 40-gram serving of waxy maize starch, you can consume about 38 grams of carbohydrates. The exact nutrient value varies by brand.

Protein Supplements

Your muscles use protein to repair and rebuild, which is how they increase in strength after an exercise session. Every time you exercise, you create small tears in your muscle fibers that require protein to heal. If you do not eat enough protein to support this requirement, muscle loss can occur due to insufficient resources. Protein supplements, such as whey protein powder and casein powder, supply your body with about 30 grams of protein per 40-gram serving. Athletes commonly consume about 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight.

Mixing Waxy Maize and Protein

Blending a one-to-one mixture of waxy maize and protein allows you to estimate how much to consume with each scoop. Two scoops of the blend provide your body with one serving of each supplement. If your needs are higher for one supplement over the other, use a two-to-one mixture. To blend waxy maize and protein, pour the supplements in a container and stir the mixture thoroughly with a spoon. Use the supplements by the earliest expiration date indicated on either product container.

Consume waxy maize and protein by blending the supplements with water in a blender or with a hand mixer. Waxy maize starch clumps without one of these aggressive mixing implements. Consume the drink as soon as possible to prevent the supplements from sinking to the bottom. Flavor the drink by adding yogurt, sugar or sweeteners, fruit, fruit juice, milk, peanut butter or syrups. Alternatively, search for recipes, such as cookies and cakes, that use one or both powders. Some recipes require modification, which can be a tricky task requiring trial and error.

To learn your body’s exact protein and carbohydrate needs, speak with a nutritional specialist. Such a specialist can determine your nutrition requirements based on age, health, muscle mass, activity level and fitness and nutrition goals. Following a generalized recommendation typically does not yield the best results. To maximize your body's use of waxy maize and protein supplements, drink at least 10 8-ounce glasses of water per day.
