What Happens if You Drink Vitamin-Enriched Water Beverages After the Expiration?

By Melodie Anne

Vitamin-enriched waters don’t have an expiration date, but you’ll often see a “use by” or “best by” date on the packaging. These dates are designed to let you know the time frame in which your drink will be the most effective and offer the most nutrients. While they won’t go bad, vitamin waters may not have the same perks if you drink them after the dates on the bottles.

What Can Happen

Most vitamins lose potency over time, especially when stored under certain conditions. Some brands of vitamin-enriched water come in clear plastic bottles. This exposes the vitamin-filled drink to light, which gradually degrades vitamins. Plus when vitamin-containing waters are stored in warm facilities or sitting out under a light for a long period, the products can heat up. Heat exposure further degrades vitamins, ultimately making them not as effective. If you drink vitamin water beverages after the “use by” or “best by” date, they generally shouldn’t make you sick, but you probably won’t get the same level of vitamins as you would from a fresher bottle.
