How to Avoid Cravings While Juice Fasting

By Ashley Miller ; Updated June 13, 2017

People have used fasting and cleansing techniques for thousands of years. In fact, philosophers and spiritual leaders such as Plato, Socrates and Buddha, have used fasting as a way of cleansing the body and soul. Juice fasts have become increasingly common techniques for cleansing. According to the Total Body Fitness website, juice fasts may help release toxins and improve the functioning of certain organs, including your kidneys, colon and lungs. However, during a juice fast, it can be hard to avoid cravings. Cravings may develop as a result of the detoxification process. Before beginning a juice fast, or any other type of fast, discuss your plans with your doctor.

  1. Avoid artificial sweeteners, including natural sweeteners like stevia, in your beverages. Drinking specific herbal teas during your juice fast can provide detoxification support, but both natural and artificial sweeteners can trigger sugar cravings.

  2. Take 500 micrograms of chromium picolinate daily. In their book "Prescription for Natural Cures," James Balch, MD, and Mark Stengler, ND state that taking chromium will help reduce cravings for sweet foods and help regulate your blood sugar levels.

  3. Drink a blend of 1 cup of sesame or sunflower seeds with 3 1/2 cups of water. High-protein protein drinks can help alleviate cravings and help fulfill your protein needs during your fast.

  4. Implement a relaxation routine. Go for a walk, meditate or listen to guided visualization programs to help manage your stress levels. Focus on the benefits you will reap from completing your juice fast. Walking and breathing exercises can help you better manage food cravings during your juice fast.

  5. Distract yourself by doing something you enjoy. Watch a funny movie, call a friend, read a book or engage in some form of activity to keep your mind off your cravings until they pass.

  6. Warnings

Consult your doctor before using any dietary supplements.
