Vegan Warrior Diet

The Vegan Warrior Diet is a variation of the Warrior Diet created by Ori Hofmelker 2. A chosen lifestyle and not a simple weight-loss plan, the Warrior Diet flies in the face of all accepted thoughts on diet and nutrition 2. Holfmelker used his own personal experiences to craft a unique eating plan based on instinctual beliefs and the natural eating habits of predators and ancient hunters. Individuals on the Warrior Diet forsake the accepted approach of six small meals each day in favor of only one large meal eaten at night 2. Because of its simple approach, the Warrior Diet allows for easy customization, making it suitable for even strict vegans who avoid meat and all animal products 2.

History

Billed as a modern renaissance man, Ori Hofmekler graduated from Jerusalem’s Bezalel Academy of Art and earned a human sciences degree from the Hebrew University before joining the Israeli special forces. While his artwork has been featured in magazines around the world, Hofmekler has dedicated much of his life to studying diet and nutrition, inspiring him to create the Warrior Diet as a way to dispel common fallacies and help others achieve their health and fitness goals 2. Hofmelker published the "Warrior Diet" book in 2002 and continues to try and revolutionize the way people think about weight loss and fitness 2.

4-3-2-1 Diet

Learn More

The Warrior Diet calls for little to no food eaten during the day, forcing the body to call on its nutritional reserves to sustain daily activities 2. All exercise and training should be done during this period of daily fasting, prompting the body to burn excess fat. People may customize the period of undereating to fit their needs, adding small snacks of fruits, vegetables, nuts and protein throughout the day if needed. However, individuals should strive to eat as little as possible and should stay clear of carbohydrates that could raise insulin levels. Then, once night falls, the dieter gets to feast, eating one large meal to fuel the body.

Function

Even the Vegan Warrior Diet mimics the natural eating habits of the animal kingdom's great predators 2. The diet breaks down to 20 hours of undereating and four hours of overeating. According to Hofmekler, undereating or fasting during the day maximizes the Sympathetic Nervous System, which dictates the body’s natural fight or flight responses. As a result, you’ll be more alert and capable of handling stress, even burning more fat in the process. Meanwhile, the Hofmelker claims the diet’s overeating phase maximizes the Parasympathetic Nervous System, which dictates the body’s recuperation powers. Consuming the one large meal at night relaxes the body, promotes proper digestion and stimulates hormone synthesis and protein synthesis, aiding with muscle building.

The Warrior Diet places no restrictions on the amount of food eaten during the nighttime meal 2. You can even stack meal after meal if you want, with the idea being to feed your body until it has had its fill. However, the Warrior Diet does recommend eating proteins first and then following them with your vegetables and carbs 2. Following the Vegan Warrior Diet would demand getting all necessary protein from beans, tofu, seeds, nuts and other plant-based protein sources and supplements 2.
