Herbal Tea That Makes You Feel Full & Not Hungry

Excess weight has many causes, including chronic health conditions that require prescription medication treatment. Losing just 5 percent to 10 percent of your weight can improve blood pressure, blood sugar levels and cholesterol and reduce your risk of diabetes, heart disease and even osteoarthritis. Some types of herbal teas purportedly help you maintain weight by making you feel full and suppressing unhealthy appetite cravings. There is no adequate clinical evidence that they work, however.

Hoodia to Suppress Appetite

Some herbal teas are recommended for weight loss because proponents claim they help reduce hunger pangs and overeating by balancing your blood sugar levels. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine notes that the herb hoodia, which can be brewed to make a tea, was used historically and continues to be used as an appetite suppressant 1. Clinical studies are needed, however, to determine how it works or whether it has any effect on weight loss.

NYU Langone Medical Center notes that other herbal teas are also touted for their weight-loss effects 2. But the reasons they may help reduce hunger and aid in weight loss are not yet clear. These herbs include:

  • buckthorn
  • chickweed
  • fennel
  • ginger
  • ginkgo
  • gotu kola
  • hawthorn
  • licorice
  • milk thistle
  • parsley
  • yucca

Although most herbal teas do not contain caffeine, they can have other potent effects; consult your doctor before trying any type of herbal remedy for weight loss.
