Side Effects of Hydroxycut Hardcore on Teens

By Joe King, M.S. ; Updated July 18, 2017

Hydroxycut Hardcore is a brand-name supplement marketed to adults and teenagers as a fat-burning nutritional aid, selling over 1 million units a year. Hydroxycut is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration who, in 2009, issued a warning for consumers to stop using Hydroxycut immediately due to the high risk of side effects in teenagers. Some of the reported side effects of Hydroxycut include increased blood pressure, dehydration, liver damage, and abdominal pain.

Increased Blood Pressure

One of the most commonly reported side effects of Hydroxycut Hardcore is an increase in blood pressure. Hydroxycut contains stimulants such as caffeine and other compounds that are designed to raise your core body temperature by increasing your heart rate and blood pressure. Increasing your heart rate and blood pressure result in an increase in thermogenesis, or heat production, which increases your body's ability to burn fat. Teenagers with hypertension or an underlying heart condition are especially susceptible to the changes in heart rate and blood pressure resulting from stimulant ingestion. In extreme cases, Hydroxycut Hardcore Supplementation has resulted in serious heart conditions and death.

Hydroxycut Hardcore contains ingredients that are known to deplete water stores in your body. Some Hydroxycut users report an increase in urination and sweating, both contributing to a loss in body water. This may make you more susceptible to dehydration, which can result in numerous problems such as muscle cramps, diarrhea and heart palpitations. Dehydration may be exacerbated in teenagers who exercise in the heat, which increases natural thermogenesis. Teens can prevent dehydration by consuming adequate amounts of water and avoiding exercise in heated environments while supplementing with Hydroxycut Hardcore.

Liver Damage

Research suggests that Hydroxycut Hardcore may increase liver toxicity, resulting in liver damage. Everything you eat eventually passes through your liver for filtration before it is distributed throughout your body, including the individual ingredients of Hydroxycut Hardcore. It was the possibility of liver damage from Hydroxycut use that prompted the Food and Drug Administration to recall the product in 2009. Hydroxycut may elevate liver enzymes in teenagers, which is an indicator of positive liver damage.

Abdominal Pain

Hydroxycut Hardcore may cause teens to experience abdominal pain. This may be due to the combination of multiple herbal extracts that are still largely unstudied and have yet to be scientifically validated for human benefits. Hydroxycut may cause persistent nausea and abdominal pain, which may potentially lead to other conditions in teens such as malnutrition and electrolyte imbalance. These effects may be reduced with an increase in fluid intake, however if the nausea and abdominal cramping persists, it may be an indicator of additional damage or injury resulting from Hydroxycut Hardcore supplementation.
