Twister for Weight Loss

The classic Hasbro game, Twister, has been entertaining children and adults for decades. Twister includes an element that many classic games simply do not afford -- physical fitness. The original Twister game challenges players to bend, stretch, and assume positions they may have never known possible. Newer versions of the classic game teach players to dance, hop over objects, and spin hoops. Regardless of the Twister game you play, you can burn some serious calories, perhaps even lose some weight, and enjoy a lot of fun along the way.

Gaming Your Way to Weight Loss

According to the American College of Sports Medicine, you need at least 150 to 250 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week to lose a modest amount of weight. You will need to do more than 250 minutes of exercise each week to keep the weight off. Playing a 30- to 45-minute Twister game most days of the week can help you meet those recommendations while keeping your fitness routine fun and varied. Mix up your routine by rotating between the original Twister game and some of the newer editions to challenge your body with different types of training.

The classic Original Twister game is an effective way to begin burning extra calories. The moves in the Original Twister game challenge you to stretch, hold your own body weight, and test your balance. Because these moves are most similarly matched to light resistance training and stretching, someone weighing 125 pounds can expect to burn 90 calories in 30 minutes while a 185-pound person will burn about 178 calories.

Bust A Move

Twister Dance Rave is a newer version of the physically engaging Twister game. With audible cues from the actual game and musical accompaniment form your own music player, Twister Dance challenges you to create your own dance moves using the classic colorful dots as your dancing road map. With the fast dancing exercises you do during a game of Twister Dance Rave, you can easily expect to burn 180 calories in 30 minutes if you weigh 125 pounds and to 266 calories 185 pounds.

Something to Rave About

Twister Rave Hoopz and Skip It offer calorie-burning potential as well. You can wear a hoop around one ankle with an attached object to swing and hop over, or wear hoops around your wrists to whirl and spin. Both Rave versions of Twister encourage you to stay with the game as long as you can. The longer you skip, hop, or spin, the more colors you will see light up on the game. The hoop-spinning and hopping may remind you of child games like hopscotch or hula hoop where someone weighing 125 pounds will burn about 150 calories per half hour while a 185-pound person will burn around 222 calories.
