Keeping fit on a daily basis can seem like a chore, especially if you buy into the commercials for weight-loss products, diet pills and faddish exercise equipment. But being a fit person can be overcomplicated when you stray too far from the basics. The best way to keep fit is to simply eat healthier and move more. By making smarter choices in your day-to-day life, you can create lifelong habits that will help you stay fit without the need for diet aids and expensive weight-loss plans.
Commute to work in a physical way. If you're within walking distance, hit the pavement or take your bike. If you live too far from work, take public transportation to facilitate some walking, or park as far away from your building as possible. Actively look for ways to move your body rather than shying away from those opportunities is one of the differences between someone who is fit and someone who exhibits sedentary behavior.
Shop the perimeter of the grocery store. The food you put in your body will ultimately contribute to your level of fitness, and you'll find healthy, whole foods around the perimeter of the store. Grocery chains place eggs, meat, bread, fruits and vegetables, and dairy around the edges of the store so you're more likely to shop the aisles, which are often full of processed, unhealthy foods. Stick to the outside walls so you can feed your family nutritious meals and save money.
Enlist a friend to exercise with you on a daily basis. Heading to the gym or doing a workout DVD on your own can be boring. When you make a commitment to exercise with a friend, your workouts become more interesting and you make yourself accountable for your level of activity to someone else. Make a pact to avoid canceling your sessions unless absolutely necessary, and make exercising together a habit.
Stash healthy snacks where you're most likely to binge on chips, cookies and snack cakes. If you're often tempted by the vending machine in the late afternoon, keep trail mix in your desk or car to help you ward off the munchies. By eating throughout the day, you keep your metabolism stoked high in order to burn calories. Look for snacks high in protein, fiber and nutrition so they're filling and healthy.
Drink water all day. Every other beverage contains calories, sugar and other chemicals. Nothing hydrates your body like water. Purchase an aluminum water bottle and keep it filled all day. Drinking water is especially necessary in conjunction with your workout program.
Your aim may be to keep fit the easy way, but at least commit to it every day. This is a lifestyle change that is do-able.
Check with your health-care provider before beginning an exercise program for the first time or if you have been away from fitness programs for a while, or if you have any chronic health issues.
