What are the Side Effects of Mercury Fillings?

By Susan Kaye ; Updated August 14, 2017

Mercury, one of the most toxic substances on Earth, is the main ingredient comprising 50 percent of the silver-colored amalgam fillings many people have in their mouths, according to Dr. Paul Gilbert of the Academy of General Dentistry. Numerous holistic dentists such as Dr. Hal Huggins, who developed the protocol for removing dangerous mercury-based fillings 40 years ago, recognize the often fearsome side effects of using silver amalgam fillings.

Neurological

Dr. Andrew Hall Cutler, Ph.D., PE , Seattle health care consultant, notes the side effects of amalgams are those of mercury poisoning, from leached mercury found in silver-colored fillings. He reports findings such as the destruction of nerve and brain cells, accumulation of mercury found in major organs and lowering of a person's IQ. Holistic dentist Paul Gilbert lists additional side effects from mercury-based silver fillings in the teeth such as Lou Gehrig’s disease, Alzheimer’s, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, memory loss, learning disabilities, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis and myasthenia gravis.

Mental Disorders

Dr. Hal Huggins, an expert in mercury removal dentistry, reports on numerous psychological disorders that appear to be the effect of mercury in amalgams, including but not limited to, borderline personality disorder, depression, anxiety, insanity of all kinds, schizophrenia, panic attacks and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

Vision and Respiratory Symptoms

Based on his research paper by M.F. Ziff, “Documented Clinical Side-Effects to Dental Amalgam” from Advances in Dental Research, the entire system is affected by exposure to mercury including the respiratory organs with asthma, disorders of the bronchial tubes, emphysema, COPD and eye problems including nearsightedness, farsightedness, eye floaters, corneal ulcers and glaucoma.

Cancer

All forms of cancer have been reported as a result of exposure to mercury, according to M.F. Ziff.

Oral

Exposure to mercury in amalgams is believed to cause oral galvanism, reports the study “Documented Clinical Side-Effects to Dental Amalgam.” Oral galvanism is an allergic reaction where the fillings have become like a battery after exposure to saliva and an electric current is released. The person feels shocks in the teeth and throughout the mouth when other metals are introduced like utensils. Gilbert says that mercury toxicity is the root of conditions and diseases such as gingivitis, periodontal disease, multiple root canals and tooth loss.

Reproductive, Hormonal and Enzymatic

Huggins and Gilbert have noted amalgam/mercury dental filling toxicity side effects ranging from those affecting the female reproductive system such as problems conceiving, miscarriages and difficult menopause and hormonal/enzymatic conditions developed by exposure to mercury from silver fillings. These include Hashimoto‘s thyroiditis, Grave’s disease, endocrine disorders, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Chron’s disease, IBS, ulcerative colitis, leaky gut syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivities, rheumatoid arthritis, allergies, autoimmune diseases, lupus, psoriasis and environmental sensitivities.
