Healthy Foods for Lowering Uric Acid Levels

Uric acid and uric acid crystals are the basis for painful gouty arthritis as well as the formation of uric acid kidney stones. Elevated uric acid levels in the body may have several causes ranging from poor kidney function to diet, to potassium deficiency or a reaction to medications, vitamins or your weight loss dieting, according to Health911.com. Reduce the uric acid in your body by eating some or all of these healthy foods known to help with gout pain and lowering uric acid levels.

Condiments, Spices

Health911.com mentions apple cider vinegar for dissolving uric acid crystals by changing the blood pH to a more alkaline state. Add 1/3 cup ground ginger in the bathtub to encourage the body to sweat and remove uric acid from the system. Remember to rinse off after your bath to remove any residue from the ginger to protect your skin.

Fruits, Fruit Juices

Tart cherries, tart cherry juice, sweet cherries are all excellent source of potassium and a well known treatment for gout. Tart cherry juice mixed with water helps uric acid to become more alkaline in the body enabling it to be neutralized says Health911.com. They further report that Dr. Ludwig W. Blau discovered the cherry cure in 1950 when he cured his own gout. Eat 20 to 30 cherries or drink a glass of cherry juice as soon as you feel a gout attack starting. Cherries possess an enzyme that neutralizes uric acid and are high in antioxidants as well as having an anti-inflammatory action.

Strawberries, blueberries and grapes are all high in alkaline properties which dissolve uric acid and crystals helping them to be eliminated during urination.

Alfalfa is high in minerals and other nutrients that reduce serum uric acid in the blood. Parsley is a great diuretic, which is helpful in raising urine volume which encourages elimination of uric acid.


Dr. Theodore A. Baroody recommends in his book, “Alkalinize or Die” that gout sufferers eat highly alkaline whole grains to aid in the elimination of uric acid. Celery seeds relieve gout by removing uric acid from the body. Health911.com quotes, “According to James Duke, Ph.D., a medical botanist formerly with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, celery seeds contain about twenty different anti-inflammatory agents.” And although there is really not much research or scientific evidence of their efficacy in reducing uric acid from the blood, the anecdotal evidence is loud and clear reports Kerry Bone, an Australian herbalist reporting that the seeds “work brilliantly in patients”. Her recommended dose is 500 mg twice daily. She also warns that pregnant woman and people with kidney disease should use extreme caution as celery seeds are a potent diuretic and can aggravate kidney disease.
