The Effects of Red Clover on Fertility
For couples trying to conceive, any solution to their hopes of getting pregnant are often taken gladly and quickly. From herbs to invasive medical procedures, couples submit themselves to various different treatments -- anything to make their dreams come true. A natural, herbal remedy for centuries, red clover has been praised for its helpful effects on fertility.
Isoflavones and Estrogen
One of the ways that red clover aids in fertility is that it acts similar to estrogen, an essential hormone in the female reproductive process. When red clover is ingested correctly, it contains isoflavones, plant-derived chemicals that seem to produce effects on the body that are similar to the effects of estrogen. Toni Wechsler, a fertility expert, explains that an estrogen surge causes follicles to get ready for ovulation, until one egg bursts though and ovulation occurs.
Vitamins and Minerals
Red clover contains a plethora of healthy vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, chromium, magnesium, thiamine and niacin. All of these nutrients set the stage for optimum health and well-being. Although pregnancy can take place in any woman who is ovulating, women who are the peak of health have the biggest advantage and the best odds at fertility. Taking care of your body and maintaining a healthy diet create the optimal platform for pregnancy.
Red clover has long been an aid for detoxification. In addition to its use in fertility, The University of Maryland Medical Center points out that it is often prescribed by doctors to ease coughs in children. These same properties that help thin mucus and increase blood flow serve to assist in a variety of ailments, including infertility. They wash out harmful teratogens which can prevent a healthy pregnancy, and help relax the reproductive organs which increases the chances of pregnancy.
