Alkamax Alkaline Booster Ingredients

By Adam Cloe Ph.D./M.D.

The amount of acid present in the body is carefully regulated. The blood has a slightly alkaline pH, which means that there is more alkaline than acidic compounds present in the blood. If the blood becomes too acidic, which can occur as a result of eating too many acid-forming compounds, many different parts of the body will not function efficiently. The Alkamax Alkaline Booster product adds alkaline compounds to the body, though there is not sufficient evidence to support any claims that this supplement can treat or prevent any medical problems.

Potassium Bicarbonate

Alkamax Alkaline Booster contains 250 mg of potassium bicarbonate, according to the Trimedica website. Potassium bicarbonate is a compound which can be used to treat low levels of potassium, also known as hypokalemia, Drugs.com explains. The bicarbonate in this compound can also be used to help neutralize excess acid. Potassium bicarbonate can be dangerous for people who have certain health conditions, such as kidney disease or Addison's disease, because they may have unusually high potassium levels. High amounts of potassium can cause irregular heartbeat, confusion, muscle weakness and internal bleeding, which can manifest itself as black or tarry stools.

Calcium Citrate

Another compound found in Alkamax Alkaline Booster is calcium citrate. Calcium citrate is sometimes used as an antacid and can also be used to treat calcium deficiencies. According to Drugs.com, calcium citrate can cause increased urination, decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting, constipation and increased thirst. Calcium citrate should be taken with a full glass of water.

Magnesium Citrate

Magnesium citrate, another component of Alkamax Alkaline Booster, can also neutralize excess acid. It can also be used as a magnesium supplement for people who get inadequate magnesium intake, or to treat occasional constipation. In some cases, magnesium citrate can cause diarrhea, dizziness and stomach pains as well as increased sweating.

Glycine

Alkamax Alkaline Booster also contains glycine. Glycine is an amino acid, which means that it is a constituent of most proteins. Glycine is the smallest amino acid and there is no established recommended daily intake for glycine. Trimedica's website does not list the amount of glycine present in this product.

Deglycyrrhized Licorice

Alkamax also contains deglycyrrhized licorice. This compound is sometimes used to treat digestive problems, MedLinePlus notes, such as heartburn, stomach ulcers and gastritis. When combined with other compounds, such as peppermint and chamomole, deglycyrrhized licorice can be used to reduce the severity and frequency of acid reflux. If you use products containing deglycyrrhized licorice, make sure you check with your doctor as this compound can interact with many different medications, which can either increase the side effects or decrease the effectiveness of many drugs.
