P90X Recovery Drink Substitutes

P90X involves tough workouts that warrant recovery nutrition afterwards. There are alternatives to the company's name brand offerings.

The P90X DVD series is no easy workout regimen. Based on a principle called "muscle confusion," you perform a variety of strength training, plyometric, cardio, yoga and calisthenic exercises at a high intensity for — well — 90 days to help you improve your body composition and fitness level.

The workout program recommends the use of supplements sold by the makers of P90X to help your body repair and grow in response to the rigorous workouts. The P90X recovery drink is recommended after workouts, but you can substitute this drink with other supplements and food combinations.

PowerBar Performance

Although a PowerBar Performance bar is not a liquid, it is made from simple carbohydrates that can be absorbed quickly by your body. PowerBar Performance bars are also nutritionally similar to the P90X recovery drink. The bar contains 230 calories, as compared to 220 calories in the drink. The P90X drink is slightly higher in protein, with 10 grams to the PowerBar Performance bar's 8 grams, but the drink is also higher in sugar, with 36 grams, while the bar has only 25 grams.

Milk and Banana

Bodybuilder Jim Brewster explains that consuming simple carbohydrates, such as the sugar found in fruit, can be beneficial for recovery after workouts. For this reason, a combination of a banana and milk may be a good substitute for the P90X recovery drink. Consuming one banana and a cup of skim milk provides 223 calories, with 10 grams of protein and 44 grams of carbohydrates. This is similar to the P90X recovery drink's 220 calories, 10 grams of protein and 39 grams of carbohydrates.

Whey Protein and Quick Oats

Whey protein is a type of protein that is absorbed quickly and often used for post-workout recovery. Combining one scoop of whey protein and 30 grams of quick oats provides 230 calories, 27 grams of protein and 22 grams of carbohydrates. Because protein is necessary for muscle building, this may be a good substitute for those looking to gain muscle mass.

Orange Juice and Whey Protein

Combining orange juice and whey protein provides simple carbohydrates and quickly absorbed protein for recovery. This combination provides 220 calories, with 28 grams of carbohydrates and 25 grams of protein. This is similar to the 220 calories, 39 grams of carbohydrates and 10 grams of protein provided by the P90X recovery drink.
