Candida Diet and Coffee
If you are diagnosed with candida, which is an overgrowth of gut bacteria, a candida-specific diet can help balance your gut flora and get your health back on track. Unfortunately for coffee lovers, candida-specific diets generally eliminate sources of caffeine. You can still enjoy coffee alternatives provided you have clearance from your health care professional, though.
Candida is a condition caused by the overgrowth of Candida albicans, which is a gut flora yeast that lives in your mouth and intestines. Candida has many symptoms such as poor memory, acne, bloating, eye pain, headaches, inability to lose weight, abdominal pain and fatigue.
How Coffee Interacts With Candida
A strong immune system is vital to fighting candida overgrowth, and caffeine can weaken it by placing stress on your adrenal glands, according to The Candida Diet.com. In addition, caffeine causes spikes in your blood sugar, which directly interferes with reining in candida overgrowth since the yeast thrive on sugar.
Even decaf coffee has a small amount of caffeine, which means you need to eliminate coffee of all types on a candida diet. You can, however, enjoy caffeine-free herbal teas if you crave a warm mug at any point during the day. If you miss the flavor, try chicory coffee, a coffee substitute that has a similar taste and appearance.
