By Timothy Onkst ; Updated August 14, 2017

Eczema is a general term used to describe any type of dermatitis. Eczema causes itchy skin and redness and can lead to dry skin, peeling and even open sores. A variety of prescription steroid creams and nonprescription options are available to treat the condition. One of those options is pine tar soap which is used to hydrate the skin and get rid of eczema conditions.

About Eczema

There are about a dozen forms of eczema, with the most severe and chronic form known as atopic dermatitis. All forms of eczema cause itching and redness, while some also blister, weep or peel. The condition is not contagious and it almost always begins in childhood and usually in infancy. The National Eczema Association (NEA) notes that the disease alternately improves and worsens and bad periods are known as flareups.

Eczema does not always show symptoms, but during times of flareups severe itching and symptoms can show. Flareups can be caused by a variety of reasons, and the NEA notes stress, allergens, heat, sweating and irritants as triggers.

According to the NEA, research has shown that atopic diseases like eczema are usually genetically determined and inherited from your parents. If one parent has an atopic disease, his child has a one in four chance of having some form of atopic disease. The risk rises to greater than 50 percent if both parents have atopic diseases, according to the NEA.

Using Pine Tar Soap

Pine tar can be added to bath soaks, ointments, shower gels and soaps. Treating skin conditions with pine tar is making a resurgence and many doctors are advising using pine tar to treat conditions like eczema. The National Psorasis Foundation (NPF) advises that tar treatments like pine tar help to reduce inflammation, itching and scaling from skin conditions.

Pine Tar Soap for Eczema

The NPF says that pine tar can slow the rapid growth of skin cells and restore the skin's natural appearance. Pine tar can reduce the itching and inflammation of the skin. Often, tar products like pine tar are used and prescribed in lieu of prescription steroid creams. Pine tar soap is designed to wash and cleanse the affected areas while treating the eczema inflammation. The soap version can be used in conjunction with other treatments.

Results with Pine Tar Soap

In most cases, pine tar soap can be an effective treatment for eczema and other skin conditions. Bella Online notes that pine tar is often used as a wound treatment and antimicrobial, so in most people it is safe to use during flareups and effective on open wounds. However, the National Psoriasis Foundation notes that in some people tars can irritate, redden and dry the skin. Some of these effects can be masked if the substance is mixed with moisturizers or diluted like in pine tar soap.
