Calories Per Ounce in Frozen Yogurt

By Frank Whittemore

Frozen yogurt is a confection, similar to ice cream, made from milk cultured with bacteria. The resulting yogurt is processed in a similar manner to ice cream. High in carbohydrates and proteins, frozen yogurt is rich in calories.

Per ounce, a typical frozen yogurt contains approximately 28 calories, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Within that amount are 21 calories from carbohydrates, just over 3 calories from fats and 4 calories from proteins.

The USDA also reports that 1 ounce of frozen yogurt weighs around 25 grams. Carbohydrates make up just more than 5 grams, while proteins weigh a little over 1 gram and fats comprise 0.4 grams. The remaining amount consists of other nutrients and water.

A 1-ounce measure of frozen yogurt contains essential vitamins, including riboflavin, niacin, folate, vitamin B12 and pantothenic acid, according to the USDA. Frozen yogurt also provides dietary minerals including calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, zinc and potassium.

Some frozen yogurts are higher in fats and sugars than others. The American Heart Association warns that increased fat content in your diet can contribute to the risk of heart disease. Added sugar in the diet, meanwhile, can also increase the risk of heart disease, as well as risk for obesity, diabetes, childhood hyperactivity and tooth decay, according to the Oklahoma State University Extension.
