The Best Vitamins to Enhance Muscle Growth

By Adam Scarano

Vitamins act as cofactors for cellular metabolism thus, they are essential for muscle growth, energy metabolism as well as cell and tissue regeneration. Vitamins can be obtained from proper nutrition high in proteins or from supplements. In addition to building, strengthening and developing muscles, vitamins are also essential maintaining the nervous system and immune system.

B Vitamins

B vitamins, such as thiamine, riboflavin, niacin and pyridoxine, are essential for muscle growth. Thiamine is a cofactor in the metabolism of proteins thereby helping increasing muscle mass. During extraneous activities, such as exercise or weight lifting, thiamine also carries oxygen to the cells and tissues of the body, preventing lactic acid build up. Vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin, metabolizes glucose and fatty acid, providing the required energy for cellular and muscle growth. Niacin is also essential for energy metabolism and according to Rxmed, niacin causes increased vasodilation to the periphery, thereby increasing the oxygen load delivered to growing and developing muscles. Biotin is a B vitamin that is extremely important for glucose metabolism. It provides growing cells and tissues with the required energy to carry out protein synthesis. Pyridoxine, or vitamin B6, increases the energy levels obtained from glucose metabolism as well as protein metabolism.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble protein essential for protein synthesis as well muscle development. Newly synthesized amino acids are essential for developing and increasing muscle mass. Vitamin A is also essential for converting glucose into glycogen. Stored glycogen is used by muscles during exercise thereby preventing fatigue. Vitamin A is also essential for the formation of red blood cells as well as growth and development notes the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is strong antioxidant protecting the cells and muscles of the body free radicals thereby helping the muscle grow and increase recovery. Vitamin C is also essential for collagen formation as well as growth and repair of tissues, notes the University of Maryland Medical Center. Collagen is essential for preventing muscle damage especially when lifting heavy weight. Vitamin C also helps to incorporate heme molecules into the blood thereby increasing the level of oxygen delivered to the muscles. Vitamin C also increases the level of nitric oxide that enters the cells of the body. Nitric oxide increases the delivery of proteins, carbohydrates and hormones to the muscle, helping to increase muscle development and growth.
