Honey Tea and Weight Loss

By Jill Corleone, RDN, LD ; Updated July 18, 2017

Although whole honey and tea are not miracle cures, there is some evidence that, separately, they may help you lose a little weight. But it's important to also make changes to your eating habits if you expect long-term results. Consult your doctor before starting any weight-loss diet.

A Look at the Evidence

A study published in 2008 in The Scientific World Journal found that replacing sugar with honey helped produce a small amount of weight loss, 1.3 percent, in a group of overweight and obese individuals. A review study published in 2012 in The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews also reports that green tea helped produce a small but insignificant loss of weight in those struggling to drop pounds. While these studies seem to indicate that honey and tea may help you lose weight, the amount lost is very small.

All Calories Count

If you're trying to lose weight, drinking tea with honey can be a part of your diet plan. But when it comes to weight loss, all calories need to be accounted for, even those that come from your honey and tea drink. One cup of brewed green tea with 1 tablespoon of honey has 66 calories. To lose weight, you need to keep your overall calorie intake below what your body needs.
