Sweet Almond Oil for Dark Circles

By Jessica McCahon ; Updated August 14, 2017

It’s inevitable. After a late night out and/or forgetting to take your makeup off before going to bed, those unsightly dark circles under the eyes are bound to appear. But there are a number of inexpensive, natural remedies, such as sweet almond oil, that can reduce the appearance of your panda eyes, says the Pioneer Thinking website.

About Dark Circles

Dark circles are the patches of dark, bruised-looking skin that develop under your eyes and can add just as many years to your face as wrinkles. However, they don’t only occur during the aging process. Children and young adults can develop dark circles too, says MayoClinic.com. And, while it may look like the skin below your eyes is discolored, sometimes dark circles are caused by puffy lower lids, which cast a shadow on the skin beneath them.

Causes

Some common causes of dark circles are dehydration, allergies, sinus problems, genetics and smoking, says MayoClinic.com. All these factors restrict blood flow around your body, including to your face, prevent the removal of toxins and/or dilate the blood vessels around your eyes, making them more obvious through the thin, delicate skin.

Almond Oil Benefits

Almond oil is a natural emollient, which means it’s great for softening the skin and holding in moisture, says the Dermaxime website. It can, therefore, help reduce dark under-eye circles caused by dehydrated skin. It is also a natural anti-inflammatory, so it may reduce puffy lower eyelids and the dark circles associated with them.

Usage

You can gently massage almond oil under your eyes morning and night, says the Pioneer Thinking website. But you can also try making a paste and applying it to the area as a mask, says the Simple Health Tips website. Mix equal amounts of pure almond oil and honey in a bowl, and apply it to the skin under your eyes. Relax and let the mixture work for 10 minutes or so before carefully washing it off. Don’t expect to see immediate results. Almond oil as a dark circle treatment will achieve optimum results if applied daily and given time to work.

Precautions

Always use caution when using this product -- especially when pregnant, says Drugs.com. While sweet almond oil is generally considered to be safe, it can cause allergic reactions in some people. There is, of course, the fact that getting it in your eyes can cause irritation and the delicate skin around the eye can also be more sensitive than other areas of your body.
