Does Protein Water Help with Weight Loss?

By Carly Schuna ; Updated July 18, 2017

Weight loss is a complicated process, but it’s closely tied to what you eat and drink. Some beverages fill you up better than others, and according to scientific research, protein water may be one of them. There’s no guarantee that protein water will help everyone slim down, however, and you should always talk with your doctor before trying any new plan for weight loss.

Trial Results

In 2011, the journal “Appetite” published the results of a clinical trial on protein water from a team of New Zealand researchers. The scientists gave overweight women protein-enriched water before lunchtime and then measured their hunger signals. According to the study, women who drank water with protein added did feel less hungry before eating and fuller after the meal than women who drank regular water -- and they consumed fewer calories at lunch.

Calorie Intake

Protein water may have the potential to help with weight loss because protein is a more filling nutrient than either fat or carbohydrate. This means that if you drink protein water, you may get full sooner and consume fewer net calories, leading to weight loss over time.
