What Are the Benefits of Buttermilk Fasting?
Buttermilk may be best known for its uses in biscuits and pancakes, but it also has health benefits as well. Some health experts recommend fasting to treat many conditions; following a period of fasting with a diet of only buttermilk may combine the benefits of both. Buttermilk is a fermented dairy product and a rich source of probiotics. Buttermilk may ease digestive complaints but cannot cure any disease; check with your doctor before fasting with buttermilk.
Buttermilk and fasting can both relieve symptoms of heartburn and indigestion, according to the Ayurvedic tradition. Buttermilk can soothe the burning sensations associated with poor digestion and help prevent dehydration. Buttermilk should be consumed along with plenty of water.
Buttermilk may offer relief from gallbladder attack symptoms, including abdominal pain after eating, nausea and diarrhea. Gallstones form when liquid bile in the gallbladder hardens and turns into small pebbles, which can be extremely painful. Regular milk is not helpful for gallstones and may make the condition worse. Fasting may also improve gallbladder symptoms because eating often aggravates the problem.
Candida is a condition in which too much yeast builds up in the body. It can cause a variety of unpleasant health symptoms, including frequent vaginal yeast infections, fatigue, sugar cravings, weight gain and skin rashes. Candida overgrowth results from an imbalance of bacteria in the body, in which there are too few "good" bacteria to keep it in check. Harmful bacteria may proliferate because of consuming too much sugar. The probiotics in buttermilk can replace the body's good bacteria, particularly following a period of fasting that stops feeding the bad bacteria.
Fasting has been recommended since Biblical times for physical and spiritual health. Modern diets are often unhealthy and can contribute to disease states. According to Brigham Young University, people who fast on a regular basis for spiritual reasons have lower rates of cardiovascular disease and diabetes and may live longer. After cleansing the body with a period of fasting, drinking buttermilk will add positive nutrients and probiotics back into your system.
