How Many Calories Are in the Master Cleanse Diet?

The Master Cleanse diet, which has you consume a concoction of lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper and water for up to 10 days, can help you lose weight -- but not in a healthful or substantial way. You're instructed to consume six to 12 glasses of this "lemonade" daily, which amounts to about 650 total calories. The only other substances that touch your lips are a saltwater flush and a laxative tea, neither of which supplies additional calories.

Dieters Be Warned

When you consume so few calories, you're bound to lose weight. It's tantamount to starvation. Much of the weight change you see on the scale is only water weight and lean muscle mass, not actual fat. While eating so few calories, you may experience nasty side effects that include irritability, uncomfortable bowel movements, headaches, fatigue and cravings. You're likely to regain much or all of the weight you lose when you return to a diet that involves whole foods and a more normal calorie intake of at least 1,600 calories per day for women and 2,400 calories per day for men.
