As you age, pigment may accumulate in the skin, resulting in areas known as age spots, according to the website Health 911. Free radicals cause these spots and their appearance can be accelerated by factors such as smoking and excess sun exposure. Topical vitamin applications may help to reduce the appearance of age spots.
Topical vitamin A can be applied to the skin in order to reduce the appearance of age spots, according to “Prevention’s Healing with Vitamins.” When applied to the skin regularly, vitamin A encourages cell turnover and may break up the melanin pigments that cluster together to form age spots, according to Real Self, a plastic surgeon-reviewed health and wellness website. The process helps remove the damaged portions of skin cells that are darkly pigmented, encouraging new, healthy skin cells to grow in their place. Vitamin A is sold over the counter as retinol or is available by prescription in greater strengths as tretinoin cream. Topical vitamin A also may be combined with glycolic acid or a bleaching cream in order to weaken the appearance of the age spot. When initially applied to the skin, vitamin A cream may cause some sun sensitivity and irritation. You may wish to begin by applying a small amount every other night to the affected area, according to Dr. Audrey Kunin, a dermatologist writing on the DERMA Doctor website. With continued use, the irritation likely will subside.
Although not proven to work as well as topical vitamin A creams, topical vitamin C has been shown to reduce free radical damage, according to “Prevention’s Healing with Vitamins.” Free radicals are particles in the body that cause inflammation and can accelerate aging, causing tissue damage such as age spots. Applying topical vitamin C to the face can help to fight against this damage. Topical vitamin C is available over-the-counter and may be labeled as ascorbic acid, according to Real Self.
Applying a 5-percent vitamin E cream or oil after sun exposure can help to reduce the damage that leads to age spots, according to “Prevention’s Healing with Vitamins.” Topical vitamin E is known for its ability to fight free radicals and reduce inflammation. Apply daily to the areas where you notice the first signs of age spots.
