L-Tyrosine for Weight Loss

By K.T. Parker ; Updated July 18, 2017

The amino acid L-tyrosine is one component that assists in your brain's ability to create neurotransmitters such as dopamine. L-tyrosine is purported to help you lose weight by boosting metabolism, though there is no proof to support the claim, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Theories and Speculation

In his book, "Brink's Bodybuilding Revealed," Will Brinks states there is no evidence that L-tyrosine helps you lose weight, but says studies have shown it may help suppress appetite when used in conjunction with weight loss products containing caffeine, ephedrine or phenylpropanolamine. However, the Food and Drug Administration has banned phenylpropanolamine from over-the-counter products due to the risk of stroke. Based on research studies conducted on rats, L-tyrosine may enhance your sense of well-being when you restrict your caloric intake, according to Claude Bouchard and George A. Bray, the editors of "Handbook of Obesity: Clinical Applications."

The Bottom Line

There is no definitive proof that L-tyrosine can help you lose weight. The amino acid may play a supportive role in your weight loss routine, but L-tyrosine shouldn't be the cornerstone of your plan. The best way to lose weight is to reduce calories so that you burn more than you consume, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Exercise is also critical to success.
