How Many Calories Are in a 12 oz Can of Pop?

By Nina K.

Soda pop may taste appealing, but most regular varieties are fairly high in calories. Worse, virtually all of those calories come from sugar, so soda has no nutritional value. Drink soda in moderation, as the calories add up quickly and can easily lead to weight gain. Water should be your usual drink of choice.

Soda Survey

Lemon-lime soda has more calories than most other types, containing 148 calories per 12-ounce can. The same serving of cola has 136 calories, while tonic water and ginger ale both have just 124 calories per can. Although these numbers are high, most sodas still have fewer calories than lemonade or fruit juice. Diet soda, club soda and seltzer typically have zero calories, although some brands might contain a trivial amount. One flavorful, calorie-free option is to add a squeeze of lemon or lime juice to your club soda.
