Does Cetaphil Lotion Help Rosacea?
Rosacea is a skin condition that causes redness, flushing and acne-like bumps on your face. It can be difficult to treat and may cause embarrassment to sufferers. Dermatologists advise patients to choose the gentlest skin-care products for rosacea. Cetaphil cleansers and lotions are among the most-frequently recommended.
Identification
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disorder of unknown origin, most commonly affecting adult women and fair-skinned individuals. Characteristic symptoms include redness, visible blood vessels, papules and pustules -- primarily affecting the middle of your face. Rosacea can make your skin more sensitive to environmental conditions and may cause an intolerance to ingredients found in many skin-care products and cosmetics.

In the most advanced stages of rosacea, numerous telangiectases -- or broken capillaries -- can be seen. Nodules in your skin may become painful, and skin on your face may thicken. Male rosacea patients often suffer from rhinophyma, characterized by an enlarged, bulbous red nose. Rosacea can also affect the eyes -- occurring in about 50 percent of rosacea sufferers -- leading to light sensitivity or blurred vision.

Benefits of Cetaphil
Most cleansers and skin-care products can cause stinging and burning of your skin, which is why dermatologists recommend gentle formulations. Many soaps and cleansers are harsh, causing dryness and irritation. The National Rosacea Society recommends avoiding skin-care products with alcohol, witch hazel, fragrance, menthol, peppermint, eucalyptus oil, clove oil and salicylic acid. Cetaphil cleansers and lotions contain none of these ingredients and are also non-comedogenic, meaning they won’t clog your pores. The cleansers remove dirt without upsetting your skin’s protective layers or natural pH balance, and the lotion won’t leave irritating residue on your skin.

A 2007 study published by “Journal of Dermatological Treatments” involved rosacea patients who were using the topical prescription cream metronidazol 1. The subjects in the study used metronidazol and Cetaphil lotion twice daily for 15 days on one half of the face, while the other half was treated only with the prescription product. Researchers found that the Cetaphil moisturizer contributed to the restoration of the skin barrier, with skin dryness, roughness and flaking all greatly improved 3. Skin sensitivity was also significantly reduced.
Warning
Although Cetaphil lotion is one of the gentlest products available, no one product can be 100 percent free of side effects. There have been some reports that Cetaphil led to skin irritation in a few rosacea patients 3. Experiment with gentle products to determine your own personal triggers and sensitivities.
