Yerba mate tea, used medicinally by the native people in Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, is considered by many, according to, "the drink of the gods." This popular tea contains over 24 vitamins and minerals, 15 amino acids and has a plethora of antioxidants, including 11 polyphenols. Yerba mate tea is often used as a substitute for coffee. The website Guayaki also reports that yerba mate contains the stimulants xanthine, theobromine, and theopylline, which are known to have less side effects than the caffeine in coffee. Yerba mate tea is also used to improve digestion, increase mental focus and clarity, and help with weight loss.

Digestion and Elimination Aid

Drinking yerba mate regularly can help the body's digestion system function more efficiently and has the ability to cure chronic constipation issues by stimulating the body to have regular bowel movements. A study done in Buenos Aires, Argentina at the Catedra de Farmacologia "found that yerba mate induces an increase in bile flow and enhances the intestinal tract."

Yerba mate has been used for centuries as a weight loss tool and an appetite suppressant. A study done at The University of Lausanne in Switzerland also found that people who use yerba mate actually burn more body fat as energy, therefore, significantly reducing their total weight. Another study done at The Medical Center of Charlottenlund in Denmark and published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics also showed that weight loss occurred when patients used a herbal formula containing yerba mate, guarana, and damiana. This study proved that when patients used this formula, they felt fuller faster, therefore, they ate less food and were able to drop significant pounds.
