Quick Breakfast Ideas for Toddlers

By Deb Powers ; Updated June 13, 2017

Feeding a toddler can be a challenge, even at the best of times. Your 1- to 3-year-old child is developing his own likes and dislikes, and practicing his control over his environment and you. He'll dawdle over breakfast on the day you need to get out of the house or he'll decide he hates bananas after demanding them every day for the past month. A repertoire of quick, easy-to-prepare, nutritious breakfast ideas can get your toddler's day -- and yours -- off to a healthy, happy start.

Waffles and Fruit

Whether you buy them frozen or make your own and freeze them for later, whole-grain waffles can be the base of a healthy breakfast for your toddler. Instead of syrup and butter, spread a waffle with applesauce or slice it into wedges and serve it along with a dollop of her favorite baby fruit for dipping. If food allergies aren't a concern, mash up a half of a banana with peanut butter and make a whole-wheat waffle sandwich. Cut it into small, bite-sized pieces, about 1/2 inch, to prevent choking in kids under 4 years old, according to, the official website of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Yogurt and Toast

Yogurt adds calcium, B vitamins and protein to your toddler's diet in an easily digestible form. For toddlers up to 2 years old, stick to whole milk yogurt, suggests the United States Department of Agriculture. Instead of serving yogurt with added sugar and artificial colors, mix plain yogurt with mashed bananas or berries, applesauce or pureed fruit. It's a healthier choice, and it helps attune her tastes to less sweet tastes as she grows older. Add a slice of whole-wheat toast or a whole-grain English muffin with an all-natural fruit spread to complete the meal.

Baby Breakfast Burrito

Pack a lot of protein into a meal your toddler can take on the go. Scramble an egg yolk with a small amount of milk and some minced ham. Scoop the cooked eggs onto a small corn tortilla, top with shredded cheese, and roll it up so it's easy to handle. Serve the burrito with fruit juice or a side of fruit.
