How to Lower Blood Pressure Naturally During Pregnancy

Between 5 and 10 percent of pregnant women have high blood pressure readings at some point during their pregnancy, according to the University of Iowa Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. High blood pressure is generally defined as being higher than 120/80, but readings can also be considered high if the systolic pressure (the top number) rises 30 points or if the diastolic pressure (the bottom number) rises 15 points more than an individual's previous readings. Pregnant women may take medications to control high blood pressure, but they can also take steps to lower their blood pressure naturally.

  1. Follow a low-sodium diet if your blood pressure rises during pregnancy. Salty foods can cause a spike in blood pressure levels even if you are not pregnant. Be sure you are getting sufficient calories and vitamins to nourish your baby as you limit your salt intake.

  2. Take a step down from your regular routine and rest more. Women who have chronic high blood pressure while they are pregnant are at risk for developing pre-eclampsia, which can damage the mother's kidneys and create other medical complications. Lying on your left side with your feet propped up on cushions can deliver more oxygen to the baby and help manage high blood pressure levels.

  3. Reduce your stress level. Though adding to your family is a joyous occasion, thinking ahead to life after baby can be stressful at times. Learn relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, or with the permission of your doctor, take a yoga class. Creating a calm body and mind may help lower your blood pressure naturally.

  4. Refrain from using tobacco products or alcohol during your pregnancy. These substances can potentially harm your baby and may also cause your blood pressure to rise.
