What Are the Side Effects of a 20mg Dose of Simvastatin?
Simvastatin, or Zocor, is a medication in a classification of drugs known as statins. Simvastatin is used for the treatment of high cholesterol. This drug works by lowering the body's triglycerides and bad cholesterol while raising the body's good cholesterol. According to Drugs.com, Simvastatin is also used to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other heart complications in people with diabetes, coronary heart disease, or other risk factors. There are some side effects associated with Simvastatin that users should be aware of.
Patients taking Simvastatin 20 mg may experience headache, states Drugs.com. This side effect may be temporary until the body adjusts to this medication. A physician may recommend the use of an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen for the relief of headache pain and discomfort. Severe headache that is accompanied by dizziness, fainting, or numbness on one side of the body may be a sign of something serious and should be reported to a physician.
Muscle Pain and Weakness
According to Drugs.com, Simvastatin 20 mg may cause mild muscle pain and weakness. In some cases, this can lead to the development of a muscle disease known as rhabdomyolosis, which may lead to the development of kidney damage. A doctor should be notified right away if a patient experiences any muscle weakness, pain, or tenderness, especially if accompanied by fever or general body discomfort, reports PDR Health. Other signs and symptoms associated with rhabdomyolosis include dark, cola-colored urine, severe fatigue, and muscle cramping. Blood levels should be monitored frequently while taking this medication to assess kidney function and to measure serum cholesterol levels.
Patients taking Simvastatin 20 mg may experience mild stomach pain, gas, bloating, stomach upset and heartburn, reports Drugs.com. Taking this medication with food or milk may help alleviate gastrointestinal discomfort. Eating a diet of bland foods, while avoiding spicy or fried foods, may help diminish these side effects. An over-the-counter antacid, such as Maalox or Mylanta, may be recommended by a physician for the relief of occasional gastrointestinal discomfort. Nausea, constipation and diarrhea can occur while taking Simvastatin. To relieve constipation, consider a diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and food that are high in fiber. Increasing daily water consumption and exercising regularly will help increase gastrointestinal motility and may decrease constipation.
