Sensitive to smell? This is how it affects your sex life

By Leah Groth ; Updated June 05, 2018

Do you consider yourself to have a good nose for scents? According to new research, chances are you enjoying sex a whole lot more than others with less olfactory function (that means “sense of smell” in English).

A new study published in the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior claims that those who have a better sense of smell experience more pleasure during intercourse. For women, the connection is even stronger: They can even have more orgasms during sex.

German researchers, led by Johanna Bendas of the Technical University of Dresden, handed out Sniffin’ Sticks — a scent-identification test with 12 everyday smells — to 42 women and 28 men between the ages of 18 to 36. In addition to the scent test, participants were given a survey with questions about sexual desires, how often they had sex and orgasms and their perceived pleasure during intercourse.

They determined that individuals who were smell-sensitive had more pleasurable sexual encounters, despite the fact that their sexual desire and performance were not impacted. Additionally, ladies with sensitive noses were more likely to orgasm during sex than those who aren’t as sensitive to smell.

So what could explain this positive relationship between sense of smell and better sex? Researchers believe it has to do with sex smells specifically — body odors, vaginal fluids, sperm and sweat — and how they have a triggering effect, ultimately enriching sexual pleasure. “The experience of sexual interactions appears to be enriched by olfactory input,” the study reads. “The perception of certain body odors may contribute to the concept of sexual pleasure by enhanced recruitment of reward areas.”

While there may be nothing you can do to increase your sense of smell, this study is definitely encouragement to stop and smell the roses — or, in this case, sex pheromones! And if you want to improve the sexual-smell experience for your partner, here are the six worst foods to eat before having sex and five of the best. You’re welcome.
