How to Relieve Back Pain With Ginger

By Timothy Banas ; Updated August 14, 2017

Research has shown that ginger may reduce pain caused by inflammatory diseases--such as arthritis--at least as well as ibuprofen. A 2000 study conducted by Dr. R.D Altman of the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Dr. K.C. Marcussen of the Narayana Research Center in Wisconsin of 247 patients with severe osteoarthritis of the knee showed that ginger significantly reduced symptoms of pain and discomfort in those who took the supplement versus control. Other studies have shown mixed results, according to the Mayo Clinic. While ginger may relieve back pain caused by arthritis, there is no data to indicate that it would be as helpful in patients with other injuries to the back.

  1. Consume ginger juice, tea or extract several times daily with food. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, total ginger consumption should be between 2g and 4g per day. You can buy finely ground ginger root powder for measurement purposes.

  2. Rub ginger oil on your skin directly over the source of pain in your back. This can help relieve arthritis pain, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

  3. Place fresh ginger root into a warm compress and press it to the painful area of the back for several minutes at time.

  4. Warnings

Talk to your doctor before taking ginger as a supplement; the herb may interfere with some blood-thinning medications.
