Vitamins for Shedding Hair

By Maggie Lynn ; Updated August 14, 2017

A healthy head of hair begins with good nutrition. When it come to your hair, some vitamins are more important than others. If your parents had balding, shedding or brittle hair, then chances are that you will, too. However, a vitamin-rich diet can go a long way in preventing the onset and progression of hair shedding.

According to Life Clinic, biotin is a hair-healthy nutrient involved in forming fatty acids in the body. Fatty acids act as the body’s natural fueling system, providing energy. In addition, biotin helps break down various carbohydrates and amino acids in the body. Deficiencies in biotin can cause severe hair loss, along with heart, skin and cholesterol problems.

Vitamin E

Tocopherol, more commonly known as vitamin E, is classified as an antioxidant by The Merck Manuals. Vitamin E helps protect the body’s immune system from any damage that could be caused by free radicals or forms of cellular activity that often participate in chemical reactions. Unfortunately, many of these reactions are negative. Vitamin E helps regulate these processes through improving circulation and oxygen content in the bloodstream, which has a positive effect on hair growth.

Vitamin C

The commonly known vitamin C supplement, or ascorbic acid, is essential for repairs in the body to take place. Our bones, teeth, muscles, teeth and hair all rely on vitamin for healing, states The Merck Manuals. Similar in its function to vitamin E, vitamin C is also an antioxidant. A deficiency in vitamin C leaves hair loss as one of your lesser worries. It is essential to normal bodily function and more specifically hair strength and growth.

Vitamin B Complex

On every level, B vitamins are key components in regulating fatty acids and producing energy. The federal Office of Dietary Supplements requires vitamin B12 in diets to maintain proper red blood cell formation, neurological function and DNA synthesis. Vitamins B3 and B6 are classified as promoting scalp circulation and thus hair growth.
