It is a naturally occurring mineral that helps to support functions of the cardiovascular system, nervous system and digestive system. It also aids in muscular movement and utilization of glucose. Magnesium lactate is used as a supplement to treat magnesium deficiency, heartburn, indigestion and upset stomach.

When taken as a supplement, magnesium lactate helps to build strong bones and teeth by assisting in bone formation and resorption to maintain bone stability. Magnesium lactate also supports heart muscle, in conjunction with calcium. With the help of magnesium to contract heart muscle and maintain a regular heartbeat, cardiovascular function is upheld. Magnesium lactate maintains cellular efficiency by helping to sustain normal cell growth and replication, normal nerve function, and normal metabolic processes. The less serious side effects of magnesium lactate supplementation include diarrhea, bloating, gas and an upset stomach. The side effects that indicate an allergic response include hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. If any of the indications of an allergic response are present, emergency medical attention should be sought.

Dosage

Magnesium lactate is a tablet generally taken in small amounts once every 12 hours. Specific amounts are recommended by a health care provider based on personal situations. It is vital that recommended amounts are followed closely. Magnesium lactate should not be used in larger or longer does than suggested. The magnesium lactate tablet must be swallowed whole and not crushed, chewed, or broken.

Considerations

Those with kidney disease or heart disease should not take magnesium lactate. Magnesium lactate should not be taken with any other supplements that contain magnesium. It is important to tell your health care provider about all other current medications, as magnesium lactate can cause adverse reactions with certain drugs. Tablets should be taken with food in order to lessen the chance of upset stomach and/or diarrhea.
