Cinnamon and Ginger Really Do Help With Weight Loss, Say New Studies
If you’re looking to blast body fat and boost your metabolism, you may want to consider making cinnamon and ginger a part of your daily diet 1. The warming spices not only add flavor and aroma to foods, but they’ve also been scientifically proven to aid in weight loss.
Ginger is excellent in protecting against “obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and related disorders,” according to a new review published in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, which analyzed 60 previous studies on the wonder spice.
For centuries, cultures around the globe have been using the antioxidant- and phytochemical-rich root to treat ailments, promote good digestion and soothe the stomach. But the study authors, who hail from China Agricultural University, were most interested in the effect ginger had on metabolic syndrome, which include heart disease risk factors like excess belly fat.
According to their findings, ginger aids in burning fat, lowering cholesterol and blood pressure, digesting carbohydrates and secreting insulin. If that wasn’t enough good news already, the pungent plant also works as an anti-inflammatory. While results have been more promising in tests on animals and in test tubes than on actual humans — mostly due to lack of funding restricting extensive human studies — researchers are still confident that ginger is an ideal diet aid.
“The field is in its infancy in terms of assessing the impact of various spices on health in humans. But the research is very promising,” says Marie-Pierre St-Onge, whose study was part of the review.
A different study featured in Time magazine promotes cinnamon as a metabolic force that aids in rapid weight loss. Last month at the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, scientists presented research on how cinnamon effects sirtuin (or Sirt-1) genes. Researchers found that these genes — which scientists previously believed could only be activated by fasting or exercise — could, in fact, be activated by a diet rich in what they’ve dubbed “Sirtfoods,” or sirtuin-activating foods, which include cinnamon.
These findings back the effectiveness of the Sirtfood Diet, which is based on the theory that consuming Sirtfoods — including dark chocolate, red wine, blueberries, cinnamon and green tea — can be a game changer when it comes to weight loss and lowering blood sugar. Even Adele and Pippa Middleton’s trainer Pete Geracimo endorses the diet and claims he puts all of his clients on it.
What’s the best part about using cinnamon and ginger for weight loss? The two spices add deep warmth and a refreshing heat to foods like soups, curries, oatmeal and smoothies.
