How to Treat an Impacted Sinus
According to ent-consult.com, more than 35,000,000 Americans suffer from sinus infections. Impacted sinuses are another term for swollen, inflamed sinus cavities that cause pressure and pain around the eyes and forehead. Impacted sinuses can easily be treated with various medications to reduce swelling, kill off any infection and clear out clogged nasal ducts containing mucus build-up.
Cure Impacted Sinuses
Visit your doctor and talk to him about your condition. The physician will determine whether a prescription antibiotic is required to kill off any infection. After beginning your prescription, drink at least six, 8-ounce glasses of water and try to get at least eight hours of sleep per night while fighting off a sinus infection.
Take a decongestant such as Sudafed to reduce swelling in the sinus cavity. You may take the recommended dose for a maximum of seven days without talking to a doctor. Check the warning label for possible side effects and discontinue use if you experience an allergic reaction.
Purchase an expectorant such as Mucinex in order to help the body naturally drain excess mucus in the sinus cavity. Take the recommended dose and do not take more than directed. Drink plenty of water while taking an expectorant as it can dehydrate you quickly. Take caution, as many expectorants cause drowsiness.
Run a cool-mist humidifier in your bedroom as you sleep at night. Fill up the water container of the humidifier and place it on its base. Turn the humidifier on to maintain 40 percent humidity in the room. Plug the humidifier in and position it about four to six feet from yourself. Run the humidifier every night consistently as you overcome impacted sinuses.
Use saline nasal spray to keep the sinus cavity moistened and clean. Spray two sprays in each nostril. As you spray one nostril, hold the other shut and take a quick deep breath as you spray. Repeat the same process on the other nostril. Spray saline in the nose at least three times a day. Spray more often as needed to alleviate any pressure.
