How to Get Rid of a Cold Overnight

By Contributing Writer ; Updated July 27, 2017

Despite advances in modern medical science, the common cold still vexes us. Variations in the disease ensures a wide variety of symptoms and frequent infections year after year. While no reliable cure has ever been found for the cold, a wide number of treatments rooted in tradition--many often family secrets--have been prescribed to help fight off the cold. By following a few tips, you can help yourself get rid of a cold overnight.

Fortify yourself throughout the day to get rid of a cold overnight. Anytime you are awake you should be doing something to help fight the cold. Eat food at your usual schedule despite not being hungry. Choose warm or hot foods, preferably soups, to allow the inner heat to soothe. Take supplements that stimulate the immune system, like vitamin C, regularly.

Drink plenty of fluids. Water and other liquids will help hydrate you and replenish lost fluids due to sweat. Drink liquids more frequently than you commonly do, at least 10 cups per day. Avoid sugary drinks, as excess glucose in your blood can help feed the organisms causing your disease. Choose helpful drinks like natural fruit juices that have plenty of vitamin C and other vitamins and minerals.

Create a cold-fighting tea. While not all experts agree, there are a number of traditional cold-fighting tea ingredients prescribed by traditional herbal medicine. Create a mixture of ginger, catnip, echinacea, astragalus, lemon balm and other common cold-fighting herbs. Take one teaspoon of the mixture and steep it in boiled water for approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Drink the tea as often as possible.

Sleep as often as possible. The body fights off infections and disease best when you are sleeping, so do so as often as possible. Stay in bed as long as you can continue to sleep, and return to bed frequently to attempt to sleep more. Use cold-fighting medicines with gentle sedatives like NyQuil to help you maximize your sleep time, especially before you go to bed for the night.

Sweat it out. Many people swear that the best way to get rid of a cold is to sweat it out. Apply a muscle ache cream to your chest, arms and legs before going to bed. Keep several blankets on you, as many as you can stand and still fall asleep. Drink water whenever you wake up to keep fluid levels in your body high throughout the night.

Tip

Use zinc remedy products like Zycam at the fist symptoms of a cold. Zinc helps to inhibit additional disease growth.

Warnings

Do not attempt the last step if you are running a high fever. Surrounding yourself with too much heat could cause the fever to worsen.
