Remedies for Healing a Jammed Thumb

A jammed thumb can be caused if the thumb is bent abnormally. Jammed thumbs can result in extreme swelling and pain. If the thumb is jammed severely and cannot be moved, you should consult a physician to be sure there are no broken bones. There are many home remedies that you can try to help heal your jammed thumb. Be sure that you treat the thumb daily until the swelling has subsided. Once the swelling is gone, you can return to your normal daily activities.


Apply ice to the jammed thumb to treat it. Ice packs are great to use and fill with ice. Ice packs can purchased at stores like Walmart. If an ice pack isn’t available, you can place ice inside of a plastic bag and place on the jammed thumb. Ice helps with the swelling and will temporarily numb the thumb, helping with the pain. Ice should be applied for at least 15 to 20 minutes and repeated daily until the thumb is back to normal.


Apply a brace on the jammed thumb to keep it stable. Keeping a thumb from moving is hard if you’re an active person. There are thumb braces that can be purchased at your local pharmacy. The brace will help to immobilize your thumb and help it to heal faster. You can also wrap the injured thumb in heavy gauze to keep it stable.


Soak your thumb in Epsom salt to help it heal. Epsom salt is often used for sore muscles and can help soothe a sprain. Pour about a cup of Epsom salt into a container, mix it with water and soak the thumb for about 20 minutes. Soaking the thumb in Epsom salt will not only help it heal, it will help with the pain. You can also take a small amount of ibuprofen to help with the pain.
