Quickest Crash Diets That Work

By Sam Amico

While crash dieting isn’t considered to be the best way to lose weight, particularly when it comes to keeping the weight off, there is no question it can help you shed pounds quickly. The key is finding a plan that enables you to lose weight fast while providing your body with nutrients and keeping you from feeling sluggish.

Fruits & Veggies

Fruit and vegetables provide the majority of nutrients your body needs, as long as you get enough. The great news about a crash diet consisting of fruits and vegetables is you can eat as much as you want and still lose weight quickly. This type of diet will also keep you from lacking energy; it will likely have the opposite effect, provided you also drink plenty of water. A diet consisting of solely fruits and vegetables may consist of an orange, grapes and sliced apple for breakfast, a salad with low-fat dressing for lunch, and a dinner salad loaded with raw carrots, broccoli and cauliflower. Snack as much as you want between meals, provided the fruits and vegetables are not frozen or canned.

Juicing is another great way to take off weight quickly and has many of the same principles as a plan of strictly fruit and vegetables, the major difference being that you blend everything into liquid form. The advantage of a juicing diet is that you can mix and match various fruits within the juicer, such as apples and grapes, or oranges and bananas, or carrots and celery. Or you can make a combination consisting of all of the above. Juicers often come with drink mixes and instructions on how to map out your drinks (good juicers cost $120 to $300 as of 2009). Dieters have been known to lose up to 20 lbs. a month on a juicing plan while feeling more energetic.

Meal-Replacement Shakes

The idea of replacing meals with low-calorie, low-fat and vitamin-enriched shakes took off in the 1980s with the rise of Slim-Fast. Today, many similar meal-replacement shakes are available. No matter which you choose, the key is to follow the plan, usually consisting of a shake for breakfast, a shake for lunch, and a “sensible” solid dinner of fish or chicken and vegetables.

In order to speed up the weight-loss process, crash dieting should be accompanied by regular exercise, from jogging or brisk walking to playing basketball and lifting weights. Thirty minutes a day five days a week is a good place to start, but even taking the stairs instead of the elevator can help.

Not a Long Term Solution

Crash or fad diets are not recommended by the medical community at large. Many of the diets are extremely restrictive and limit the variety of foods you can eat--also limiting the vitamins, minerals and proteins you get. Crash diets are considered just that--when the weight comes off, it almost always comes back on. The only sure fire way to lose weight permanently is to make lifestyle changes that favor a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Consult your health care provider before trying any type of diet or making drastic changes to your lifestyle.
