According to the Mayo Clinic, side effects of Metoprolol ER that are considered common but not serious include bloating, dry mouth, gas, irritability and sleeplessness.

Serious Side Effects

Blurred vision and dizziness may occur

Serious side effects include blurred vision, chest pain, sweating and dizziness. A patient experiencing these symptoms should consult with a physician before continuing Metoprolol ER doses.

Severe Side Effects

Vomiting may occur

Severe side effects that require immediate medical attention include sudden fever, intense nausea or vomiting, bluish fingers or toes, and acute abdominal pain.
